DRIVING AT MANOR FARM, BALKHOME, YORKSHIRE
Yes, I should have been writing about driving at Escrick but we
had a last minute change of venue and what an inspired choice it was –
well done John Cooke. The farm has an extensive mounted cross country
course, but of more interest to we Poachers, were the water obstacles
that could be driven through. (Well they could if your name wasn’t Clive
and Angela Borman with Trefor between the shafts!!!) More of that
later……
The weather was
absolutely brilliant, the terrain was well managed and mown and covered
over 4 miles of agricultural land and wooded areas, it was good
driving. What will be of interest to we ladies is that the box park had
2 proper flush loos and they were much in use by all of us after a
journey to get there ranging from 2hours to 30 minutes.
We tacked up and
set about a cones course and then set off on our drive, well spaced so
that there was not too much “bunching up” at the water obstacles. This
worked fine for those in front of the Bormans but those following on had
a bit of a delay as Angela saw no option but to plunge into the water
(having forgotten to put her wellies on) and lead a very reluctant horse
through – twice. There is definitely scope for improvement there, but
luckily every other single person managed to go through with no problem,
and quite a few had several goes as their horses obviously
enjoyed it so much. I felt that that was rubbing it in a bit, but hey
ho!
We had lunch and
the farm had provided tables, chairs and drinks for us in their club
caravan and had also very kindly put out cakes and home-made biscuits
for us to enjoy. How kind, I wish all venues were as thoughtful!.
After lunch some
of us made our way home but some members had enjoyed the experience so
much they set off for another go round the course. Yes it was that
good!
All the best from a very soggy Angela
